The Learning and Development Initiative (also known as the Learning Inquiry Initiative) is an ongoing initiative in operation at various sites throughout the Vancouver School District. It’s purpose is to uncover and celebrate the knowledge, understandings, principles and skills fundamental to learning. This process includes all associated employee groups, parents, students, and community groups.
The focus this year is on implementing the innovative plans from last year’s sites, specifically on adolescent learning (12-18 year olds). An Aboriginal Learners’ Inquiry has also been launched, to explore the topic: Walking with Aboriginal Learners Through Graduation: Creating Schools Where All Aboriginal Learners Succeed. The Aboriginal summit will be held in February, 2007. The process begins with one-on-one interviews to record personal stories of powerful learning experiences. The stories from each site are gathered and discussed, and common threads are identified. The participants then gather for a two day summit to determine how they can expand upon the exceptional learning experiences at their site, based on the information discovered in the stories. Different kinds of experiences lead to different brain structures. It is very likely that our students' brains have physically changed - and are fundamentally different from ours - as a result of how they grew up. Featured Video
